Welcome to the Washington, D.C. P.E.O. Chapter Website!

We extend a warm welcome to you as you view our Washington D.C. Chapter P.E.O. website. We are thrilled to offer this site to all our Washington D.C. members and to the sisterhood at large. We invite and encourage you to browse through our secure pages. We hope that you like what you see.

The District of Columbia Chapter was organized as the 28th state Chapter on July 3, 1935. Previously the first chapter in the District of Columbia was actually organized in 1887. It was the fifth state chapter in the United States and the second state chapter outside of Iowa, however it was disbanded in 1893. Then on May 29, 1900, P.E.O. was established again in the District of Columbia. Since then, D.C. P.E.O. membership has grown to 18 active chapters and approximately 600 sisters.

DID YOU KNOW...That one famous D.C. sister was Bess Truman, one of nine initiates at the charter meeting of Chapter S on January 29, 1941? During the Truman administration P.E.O.s were invited to the White House for a reception and Bess served as hostess at the White House for several chapter meetings. Harry gave programs and attended social events with her. She remained a member of Chapter S until she joined Chapter Eternal. The P.E.O. Sisterhood, one of the pioneer societies for women, was founded in 1869 on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  A century and a half later, it has become an international organization with broad philanthropic and cultural aims and a history of assisting thousands of women in realizing their educational dreams and goals. P.E.O. supports women through educational scholarships, and is a source of friendship, encouragement and support in the lives of more than a quarter of a million women.

We invite you to learn more about this unique organization through the link to P.E.O. International, the official website of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. The gift of P.E.O. is a legacy originating from a group of young women almost 150 years ago. It is the gift of friendship and love – of service and philanthropy.
